How much does it cost to landscape a garden in London in 2026?
Garden renovation requires a significant investment.
Even a small urban garden in London can cover a larger area than the footprint of your house. The cost of renovating it per square metre will be similar to the cost of renovating your home’s interior.
For a small residential garden of around 40–60 m² in West London, I recommend setting aside at least £25,000 to make an impact. This could provide an improved layout, reasonably sized patio in mid-range natural stone, a basic, but good-quality fence, lawn and planted beds with enough plants to look well while leaving them room to grow.
You need to scale it up for larger gardens and for spaces with significant structural issues. Stone, brick and hard wood features will cost a about twice as much as those made of soft wood.
If you would also like features such as raised beds, trees, a gazebo, a path or a second patio, allow around £15,000 more.
I recommend adding a further 15% risk contingency to your garden renovation budget.
Access can also affect the cost of landscaping a garden in West London. If materials and waste must be carried through the house, labour costs will rise. Keep this in mind if you are considering blocking a back alley or side access to your property.
Timing matters too. During the peak season from May to August, when landscapers are inundated with enquiries, labour costs can be up to 20% higher than during quieter periods between late September and mid-March.
Bespoke features, including made-to-measure furniture and pergolas, come at a premium.
Basic garden lighting, including a new electrical connection to your fuse board, will cost a minimum of £2,000. Irrigation systems start at around £800, but save you money long term.
I often advise clients to complete their garden renovation in phases. This allows them to invest in better materials and finishes, rather than doing everything at once to a lower standard. I design gardens with this in mind, so each stage contributes to the finished garden and has a lasting impact.
If you are unlikely to be able to make this level of investment, hiring a garden designer may make little sense. You may be better off saving the design fee and just hiring a skilled landscaper instead. Be honest about how much you can spend, and ask them to suggest the best way to proceed within your budget.
Alternatively, you could do most of the work yourself, which opens up a whole other range of possibilities.
